MathML

MathML is a foundational specification designed for displaying mathematical and scientific content on the web and other platforms.

The current version of Mathematical Markup Language (MathML) is version 3.0, 2nd edition.

MathML in NIMAS is an application of the MathML module within the DAISY standard extension. While the MathML module in DAISY outlines the requirements for using MathML in a digital talking book (DTB), its inclusion in NIMAS specifically pertains to the creation of XML source files that adhere to the DTBook DTD-Z39.86-2005 standard (and later revisions).

The Digital Talking Book standard defines specifications for digital talking books (DTBs) intended for readers who are blind, visually impaired, physically disabled, learning-disabled, or otherwise print-disabled. Its goal is to ensure compatibility among service providers and vendors delivering content and playback systems to this audience.

The standard primarily outlines the requirements for DTB files and how they interact. It also addresses specifications for playback devices, focusing on both player performance in relation to file requirements and player behavior based on user needs.

A11y-NIMAS Master has been a pioneer in developing an automated conversion pipeline specifically for the MathML component of the NIMAS XML file set. By streamlining this critical process, we have successfully collaborated with numerous publishers to convert mathematical instructional materials into accessible formats. Our expertise ensures that Math content adheres to the highest accessibility standards, facilitating timely and compliant delivery of instructional materials for students with disabilities.
